Research Studies On The Violence Within Video Games
The video game industry continues to grow with each advancement in technology, which has caused these video games to become increasingly realistic in nature. This has added to making video game extremely popular with children, but has also caused parents to question to policies on these video games.
Children play video games almost every day for an average of over ten hours or more a week. Video games allow children the chance to work on skills such as problem solving and how to work through strategic problems as well. However, as with any popular item on the market today there has been an abundance of controversy over these popular video games. The controversy that these video games have caused is a result of these games containing violence, antisocial behavior, and gore.
The concern of parents, educators, and adults is strictly based upon the belief that these video games are extremely inappropriate for children due to the harmful violence they contain. The concern surrounding violent video games is strictly based upon the assumption that these games help contribute to the aggressive behavior among the children that play them regularly.
Research studies that have been done by organizations such as the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics show that the violence levels in some video games does increase the aggression levels among children. They feel that the children that play these video games are much more likely to imitate the actions of the characters within the games, especially when these video games require active participation from the children that are playing them. They also feel that video games are repetitive, which will only increase a child's learning of negative and aggressive behavior. The major concern with violent video games is that these games reward children for being violent within the game. In fact, the more violent a kill is during a video game, then the more points that the child is going to be awarded.
Studies have also shown that increasing exposure to violent video games will increase physiological arousal in children that include rapid heart rate and an increase of systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Some children are naturally more aggressive than other children, which causes adults to have any greater concerns. These children that have a more hostile and aggressive behavior background are much more apt to be affected negatively by the violence within the video games they play. In fact, research studies have shown that these children have a greater increase in adrenaline and testosterone while playing violent video games than children that do not have such an aggressive behavior background.
In conclusion, research studies continue to suggest and show that increased exposure to violent video games will increase a number of aggressive behaviors and thoughts within the children that are playing them. In fact, over a short term period it is felt that any type of exposure to violent video games will increase hostile behavior in children compared to the children that play non-violent video games.
